Understanding Fight, Flight, Freeze and the Fawn Response
Ever heard of the "fawn" response? It's a lesser-known reaction to trauma that results in people trying to please others to avoid conflict.
🔍 This response often develops during childhood trauma where the abuser could be a parent or significant authority figure. Over time, these behaviours become ingrained and may influence personal and professional relationships in adulthood.
The signs of a fawn response include:
1️⃣ Constantly trying to please others
2️⃣ Suppression of personal feelings and truths
3️⃣ Overwhelming guilt and self-anger
💡 Recognising the fawn response is a crucial step towards healing from trauma. With the guidance of a trained therapist, individuals can learn how to establish boundaries and express their emotions effectively.
💭 Remember, no one should have to suppress their feelings or constantly aim to please others. Recognising and addressing these behaviours can lead to healthier relationships and overall wellbeing.
🔑 In L&D, it's important to be aware of the various responses to trauma and create safe spaces for people to express their emotions and experiences.
